Emilia is the feminine form of the Roman family name Aemilius, which also gives the name Emil. It is most often interpreted as "industrious", "eager" or "rival", though the etymology of the Roman nomen remains uncertain.
The name is of ancient Roman descent and spread across Europe thanks to Christian tradition and literature. In Poland it is hugely popular today and has for years held a place near the very top of names given to girls, valued for its melodious sound and classic character.
The basis is the Roman gentile name Aemilius of uncertain origin, sometimes linked to Latin aemulus — "rival, imitator". Emilia is also sometimes confused with the separate name Amelia.
